Hearthstone Tilt and Tips to Avoid It

Last Updated: November 25, 2015

Intro and Thanks

Hello again my Hearthstone peeps. It has been a little bit since I have posted something but I am now back in full tilt. There was a little bit of a pun in that statement but I will get to that in a second. There is something I won’t to cover real quickly before I get to the whole point to the article. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that comes on to this site and reads all of the articles that all of the writers post. I know, and on this subject I can probably speak for everyone here, that all of us appreciate you guys coming on here and checking everything out and leaving us comments. I LOVE getting comments and people giving me a holla on Twitter about an article. I use my Twitter to get opinions on what I should write next, so make sure to go on there and follow so I can get you input. I also love reading your guys comments because, for one, I love seeing what you guys think and getting your opinions on everything. The other thing is I like that you took a little bit of time to stop in the middle of your busy day to post a comment to something I wrote. For that, I say thanks to all that have done that. Ok, enough of that. Let’s get to the real reason for this article.

The Feeling of the Tilt

I know that playing a game like Hearthstone can really drive some of us mad. Some of us, including myself, not only want to play a game that we love but we also want to be great at it and one day maybe, if luck comes our way, take things a little farther. I have said many times in another article that Hearthstone is a game that is more about wits a not as much about button mashing and hand eye coordination. Anyone, if they have the time and patience, can get really good at this game. I got to speak and interview none other than Hotform, runner up at the 2015 Hearthstone World Championship, and got his thoughts on some things. Let me first say that he is a very cool guy and a generally nice guy. Some of the advice and things he said can help in the long run for many of us playing this game that we love. When asked what advice he has for anyone wanting to become a more serious player, he said, “My advice would be to make sure you are having fun, it goes a lot more smoothly if you enjoy your time practicing, find a way to play that you have fun with.” That in a nutshell is where I am coming from in this article and something I want to focus on because there is something that seems to take it away from us. This game we play is something that is really a great game but can cause, what we all have come in contact with at some point, and that is TILT. Tilt happens to the best of us. I know that I have many time thought I was going to punch my computer screen when playing the game because I get so frustrated playing in the ladder. You sit and play this game with a deck you know for a fact is good but the draw just doesn’t come your way. So you go on a streak of losing and that feeling starts to seep in….. We get mad and want to break something. Then we start missing plays within the game. We start making mistakes and losing even more. That feeling of frustration seems to snowball into even more loses and that causes us to tilt even more. The next thing you know, you have deleted your account, snapped your laptop in two and jumped off a balcony screaming, “Screw You reno jackson!!!” Trust me, we have all been there but I want to tell you there are ways to avoid it and I want to go over a few of those things to help you in your climb to becoming a better Hearthstone player.

Be nice!!

The first piece of advice I have to help you as a player avoid tilt is be nice to everyone you play. I know that sounds crazy but it will help you keep a level head if you are courteous and nice to your opponent. He/She is just like you, playing a game and trying to climb the ladder. It only takes a few steps to doing this too. It honestly is something that can help you take a different perspective on the games you play. When you start the game against someone, take a minute and hit the greetings emote. It shows your opponent that you just wanted to say hey. It is kind of like saying you wish them well in the game you are about to play. Even if they don’t greet you back, you at least wanted to say hello and wish them good luck at the start of things. If your opponent makes a mistake, hit the sorry emote and truly be sorry about it. Sometimes your opponent will hit the oops and sometimes not but either way let them know that you are sorry for that mistake. It is helping you actually be nice and give them a little pat on the back for their mistake and letting them know that you are sorry. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone standing there with you letting you know that it’s ok when you make a bad decision? That’s what you just did for them. If nothing else it will help you feel like the bigger person in the end knowing you were trying to be nice. That can go a long way with helping you keep your cool. Even if your opponent is a jerk and keeps hitting the threaten emote, just say greetings or sorry when they do. IF they keep on, squelch them and know that you wasn’t being like that to them. And lastly, let them know if they made a good play. If they just hit you with some amazing play, let them know they did. This will help you not look at it in a frustrating way and instead as a fan of the game watching someone do something cool. Staying a fan of the game in the end will help you still have fun, as Hotform said, and in the end that will help you stay away from the Tilt.

Be Relaxed

I know, I know, it’s hard to be relaxed but let me tell you, it can be done. For instance, one thing I do to help this is listen to music while I play. I listen to it to help me stay calm and chill when I am playing the game. I don’t just listen to any music, I listen to music that is a little calmer and can help me stay cool. Some music I listen to is Billy Joel (yes I know, I am old). I like his music, well some of it, but it isn’t the most exciting music in the world. His music playing in the background helps me stay on an even keel while I am playing. Other stuff I listen to is Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran. This music is laid back or fun and that helps me stay calm while I am playing. Music you don’t want to listen to is harder stuff. I am a hard rock/metal fan but there is no way I am listening to Metallica or Pantera while I am playing the game. Next thing I know, I have messaged the opponent and told him I am going to give him an ass whooping, smashed everything in my room, and got a bat ready to hit the road. It would just enhance my mood if I am getting frustrated and that is what I am trying to avoid. Some people listen to comedians on YouTube, others have a movie going. It doesn’t matter what it is, just do something like that so you can have something keep you cool and calm while playing them game.

Walk Away

Sometimes the best thing to do is just stop the game and walk away from it for a bit. Go take a walk, grab a bite to eat, do anything but just walk away from the game for a bit. It will help you reset and get you back to where you need to be. Something I do is watch a streamer on Twitch. That, for some reason, helps me calm down because I hear someone talk about the game and watch them have the same things happen to them. They don’t win every game either but most of them don’t tilt live on stream. Some do, don’t get me wrong, but most just stay cool and talk about what they could do better. That will help you see someone else in the same boat that you know is a great player. We all have bad games but it is just a matter of doing something to get away from that so we can get back on course of getting better. Another thing I do is listen to a Hearthstone podcast. There are many great ones out in the world, just go pick one. Podcasts are great because they talk tech about the game but many talk about their time in the ladder too and the things they are going through. It is like having your on one-way Hearthstone support group built into a podcast. Just walk away for a bit and get your head straight.

Closing

There are many other things you can do to help you avoid Tilt in the game. You may find your own thing to help avoid it and if you do have something, please share it in the comments below. These things here have helped me keep my head on straight and stay calm while I am playing the game. The biggest thing is to remember that it isn’t that you are a bad player or the deck is bad per se (even though some decks may just stink but you will know that), it is just sometimes you will run into a little bit of bad luck and just need something to help you weather that storm until things turn back around. Getting better at Hearthstone isn’t a sprint, it is a marathon and takes time to do that. That time will be good and bad but in the end it is how you handled things that mattered. Go back to the start of this article and look at what Hotform said. It comes down to two words… HAVE FUN!!!! We love this game and just need to remember that. I am not one that is going to say it’s just a kid’s game and that getting mad over it is stupid. To some of us it is more than that and I am not going to belittle you by saying that. I just want you to remember that you do like this game and it is fun to play. More fun than most games that are out there right now in the world. I hope that this helped some of you out there. Please leave me some comments below and make sure to follow me on Twitch and Twitter. I love hearing from you guys. Thanks again for taking time to read my thoughts and remember… HAVE FUN!!!
