Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity is going to help fill in the blanks in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s story. This game will show just what happened to the land of Hyrule when Calamity Ganon brought it to its knees, all while you take down thousands of enemies.

Nintendo and Koei Techmo partnered again to bring a Zelda story to life through the classic Musou-style gameplay. But just like with the original Hyrule Warriors, it has taken a unique spin by implementing some of Breath of the Wild’s mechanics.

The game is set to release on November 20, but during Koei Techmo’s Tokyo Game Show 2020 presentation, we got a lot of new information about the story, gameplay, and what characters will be featured in when Age Of Calamity comes out.

To start the stream, the Koei Techmo representatives talked about the themes of the Hyrule Warriors games, saying that the original was themed after a festival where players could combine many characters into an extravagant experience. Age Of Calamity aims to capture what made Breath of the Wild special by focusing on its characters and style.

That leads into the story details, starting with what we already knew: it takes place 100 years prior to Breath of the Wild and will showcase exactly how the Calamity happened. The goal of each playable character is to let the player relive the past through their actions and eyes.

All four of the Champions will be playable, along with Link, Zelda, and the newly revealed Impa, who uses Sheikah techniques to battle alongside the main cast. She can summon multiple versions of herself to aid her in battle, though they look more like projections than clones.

There will also be a sidekick character following Link around, which seems to be a miniature version of the Guardians activated by the Sheikah Slate.

The Sheikah Slate can also be used to activate Link’s Rune abilities from Breath of the Wild, though only Remote Bombs and Cryonis were shown off in the gameplay showcase. This, along with other mechanics pulled from Breath of the Wild, will help provide a different gameplay experience than the original Hyrule Warriors.

The visual style was specifically meant to reproduce Breath of the Wild’s art style in order to make the entire experience feel as cohesive as possible. The goal will be to show off the lead-up to the Calamity, while also showcasing other aspects of Hyrule that might not be present in Breath of the Wild.

The entire game was created with strict guidance and oversight from Nintendo and the Zelda team. Koei Techmo actually thought the series was over after the first Hyrule Warriors game, but Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma approached the company about this idea.

In Japan, pre-order bonuses like weapons will be exclusive to certain stores, which could carry over to other versions of the game.

For pre-ordering on the Nintendo eShop, you will get the Lucky Ladle as a weapon. And if you have Breath of the Wild save data on your Switch, you will also unlock the Training Sword weapon.

More details about Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity will be shared as we approach the November 20 release date, but another character and more details will be revealed at 3 AM CT on September 27 during the third day of Game Live Japan 2020.
