Darktide serves as the spiritual successor of Vermintide 2 and expands on the gameplay features that fans grew to love in Vermintide after years of updates. Fatshark continuously worked on Vermintide 2 over the years, updating the game with bug fixes, performance improvements, AI tweaks, and meaty content expansions. Darktide is expected to have an expansive multiplayer at launch and includes several gameplay improvements to help make the experience better than Vermintide 2 at launch.
Darktide is set in a dystopian landscape and takes place in an unknown future of the Warhammer 40K universe. The game takes players away from the mystical ruins and crumbling stone cities of the typical fantasy world of Warhammer, and it pushes them into the dingy and mutant-infested bowels of an Imperial Hive City that’s fallen under the influence of a Chaos cult.
What is the release date of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide?
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 developer Fatshark released the teaser trailer of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide in the summer of 2020. Based on interviews, the game appeared to be far along in development, but several external circumstances caused it to prolong its release date. In a July 15 community update, Fatshark explains that the company had to push back its original launch window due to ongoing issues adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company cited difficulties developing from home as the main culprit of Darktide’s delay.
In a March 31 update, Fatshark announced that the Warhammer 40,000: Darktide was to release on September 13. On July 28, the official Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Twitter account shared a message from Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund revealing the game will be delayed again and will now release on November 30 for PC only. Xbox Series X/S versions of the game will launch shortly after the PC launch.
