A trailer dedicated to the X-Men for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has been revealed.

Before the Avengers became Marvel’s multi-billionaire property, the X-Men were long considered to be the golden goose for the esteemed comic company. However, when Marvel began making their own movies, the X-Men took almost a backseat to all things Marvel. This is because Marvel did not own the movie and live-action rights for the X-Men, it’s Fox Studios who owned the movie rights.

Even though Marvel had the rights for the X-Men in other media, including video games, they chose to have their games based more on the characters that appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather than have X-Men like Wolverine and Storm be the forefront of most of Marvel’s games, Iron Man and Captain America started having a bigger role in Marvel-based games.

This led to the controversial decision in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite to not have any X-Men characters in the roster. This is even though the entire Marvel vs. Capcom franchise began life as X-Men: Children of the Atom, a solo X-Men fighting game.

That decision proved to be strong oversight and is often attributed to one of the reasons why Infinite failed (though it isn’t the only reason).

With that said, Marvel’s stance on X-Men has been slowly changing in the last few years. Even before Disney (owners of Marvel) bought Fox, X-Men characters were appearing in several Marvel mobile titles, like Future Fight.

When Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order was first announced, they had Wolverine in the center of most of the marketing. It appears Team Ninja, the developers of MUA 3, has taken the lesson learned from Infinite. They know having a Marvel game without X-Men will be a mistake.

In this latest trailer for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, the X-Men takes the stage. We see more footage of the X-Mansion level in the game. We also get to witness the official reveal of Nightcrawler and Psylocke as playable characters. While Nightcrawler was on the game’s cover, the trailer is the first time we see gameplay footage with him and Psylocke.

The trailer shows the Marvel heroes teaming up to stop Magneto, who has an Infinity Stone. Mystique and the Juggernaut are bosses you face against in the X-Mansion level. Eventually, you can fight against Magneto himself, until the Black Order arrives to take away his Infinity Stone. Magneto then decides to ally himself with the X-Men, implying that Magneto will also become a playable character.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is slated to release on July 19.
